CHAPTER FOURTEEN

LACEY SAT in the brand-new Jeep, staring into the rearview mirror, watching the truck disappear into the night. Despite the young man’s confident gait and dark good looks, he didn’t look old enough to belong in a place like Bobby’s.

She’d have to make sure Peter was carding anyone whose age appeared questionable. She was not about to allow serving beer to underage kids. But this one must have just come out of the bar, since nothing else in the square was open at that time of night.

It was late, and Bobby had gone out for the night, so it had been safe to sneak out and slip into the car and have her first real good look. She shook away the oddly concerned feeling that the sight of the boy had caused, and curled her fingers around the thick steering wheel, inhaling deeply. The smell of leather and new car filled her. She hated that she loved sinking down into the plush upholstery, hated that she loved the feel of the cool enameled knob on the gearshift between the bucket seats.

For years she had relied on the bus, buying the Ford only three years ago from an old man who rarely drove. Betsy, they had named the Fairlane. But three years and a trip from north to south had taken their toll on little Betsy. This new vehicle was an answer to her prayers.

Reverently, she turned the key just far enough so she could listen to the stereo. Heaven, as a Stevie Nicks song swelled, the deep bass drumming deeply.

If only she didn’t feel compelled to give the car back.

Bobby McIntyre really knew how to get under her skin; he seemed to have a sixth sense about how to bring out her weaknesses—touching her in a way that made her want more. Giving her the kind of gift that would be the hardest to refuse.

Turning off the ignition, she locked up, huddled close against the winter night, then dashed through the parking lot, and returned inside.

“Lacey,” several patrons called out in chorus.

She couldn’t deny the silly pleasure she felt at being recognized by people she was coming to care for. And maybe, just maybe, they were coming to care about her, too.

There was Frank, who just yesterday had asked how Robin was liking school. Over the weeks she had been there, Lacey had learned how much the man loved his wife and kids.

And Melvin, forty-five and a single dad who rarely got to see his son. He had a whole wallet full of photos that regularly came out after beer number three.

She couldn’t forget Herb. Sweet, kind, bookish Herb.

Then there was Nick, who thankfully ignored her whenever she came into the bar. Not a single word had been uttered about their disastrous date.

Now, standing in the midst of Bobby’s Place, she felt a sense of peace that was as foreign as it was reassuring.

“Peter,” she said, leaning up against the bar. “Who drives an old blue pickup truck around here?”

The bartender cocked his head in consideration.
